Class Registration 101

Posted 9 months ago  in USU News.

Registration is this week, April 8th-11th! We know that supporters often help their students register for the first time, especially if your student is on a deferment or notification of leave from the university. Below are a few quick tips and frequently asked questions so that you and your student can be successful during registration!

What does my student need to do before they can register?

There are a few steps that your student will need to take before registering for classes. Make sure to follow the next steps for admitted students to ensure that your student will be ready for class registration, including completing modules 1 and 2 of the online orientation. Module 2 of the orientation is all about the registration process, including what classes to take and how to register using Banner.

When can my student register?

Course registration times are determined by the earned credits your on student’s USU transcript. Most of the incoming class will register on April 10th or 11th. Your student can determine exactly when they register through their orientation modules or through the registration calendar.

What should my student register for?

The USU General Catalog is a tool that will help you take control of your academic journey The catalog contains information about the courses, programs, requirements, and certifications offered at USU. Within this catalog students can view each program’s (also commonly called majors) program requirements, including a suggested four-year degree map, program advisor, major and course prerequisites, and general education requirements.

What are the different delivery methods?

Utah State has 6 different delivery options for how students can take classes. These include in-person, hybrid, and all online classes. It is important that your student is aware of the different methods while registering for classes.

What if my student is currently taking classes for college credit?

If your student is currently in an AP or concurrent enrollment class that will serve as a prerequisite for a course that they will be registering for, they will need to fill out our prerequisite override form, which is reviewed and processed within 2-3 business days of being submitted. This form will allow your student to register for those classes before they send Utah State an updated transcript. This form is only for incoming student and they will need to send an updated transcript to the Admissions office by August 1, 2025 in order to stay registered for the class.

What if my student is on a waitlist?

If your student is on a waitlist, they should check their new USU email account often for updates on the class. Once the class becomes available for your student, they will get an email from the University and will have 24 hours to add the class to their schedule. Your student should also check for other sections of the same class that may have readily available seats to register for instead of the waitlist.

What is Connections and why should my student take it?

Connections is a two-credit academic course designed to ease your students transition to Utah State by helping them understand the purpose of higher education and how they can intentionally take advantage of the many opportunities and challenges available to them as a college student!

Connections is offered as either a Pre-Semester course, offered August 20-22, or a 7-week Semester course. Your student can register for the class when they register for the rest of their schedule. During the course, they will receive a faculty and peer mentor that will help guide them through their first semester as a college student.
